Salmon Simply Stunning at Stoneleigh Deer Park
The field assembled for the fourth CGS Major of 2010 was the largest of the 2010 season so far. We were easily identifiable in our new Cobalt Blue CGS shirts, several positive comments were received from our host and other visitors. The players made good use of the time with putting challenges aplenty while others honed the short game. This was also a qualifier for the “Par 3 World Cup” event being organised by the “Golfer” magazine on the 27th June. The CGS will be sending two pairs to this event being played at Nailcote Hall.
Stoneleigh is a course that was well suited for a society day with generous fairways reachable par 5s and good greens. Some of the greens however are so narrow with steep banks that accuracy is an essential requirement for good scoring.
With our largest field of the season assembled consisting of 11 groups the early starters enjoyed most of the calming weather with lovely sunshine and only light winds. Unfortunately the later starters were faced with increasing wind and persistent showers, however this didn’t deter some of the players who were still able to put together very good scores.
Keith Salmon one of the early starters and playing off a 17 handicap rose to the challenges of the Stoneleigh course with a record breaking display of golf we all dream about. Keith said following his superb 47 Stapleford points return, yes I said it correctly! 47 stapleford points. “I was just able to put the ball where I wanted”. If we could all place the ball where we wanted by hand we would still struggle to score 47 points. A tremendous round by Keith which included three birdies. With that result he moves up the Order of Merit Leader board and books his place in the team for the Carib-Morris Cup.
Roan McLeod who also missed the late showers had a fantastic round securing second place, scoring 44 points, one over par gross playing off 9, which also included 3 birdies and only 24 putts. He must have thought that he’d done enough to secure the win but on any other day that would have been the case.
Founders Day winner Lloyd Thomas returned 41 points for Third place narrowly beating “New Boy” Winston “J” Berryman on count back. Longest Drive was won again by Junior Harris with a 300 yard drive eclipsing early mark set by Roan Mcleod by 20 yards, which had stood all day until Junior arrived in the final group to unleash one of those drives which he does, almost spinning out of his shoes in the process. Nearest the Pin was won by Carl Douglas who parked his tee
shot 6 feet 4 inches pin high and rolled in his second birdie of the day for good measure.
There were notably some good scores returned, namely Carl Cunningham, who had one of his better days coming in with 36 points along with Ronald Ross and Martin Chidgey. Billy Banga came home with 38 points playing of a 6 handicap. John Kirnon a former CGS member but playing as a guest came back with 40 points. Mickey Taylor, Ansel Pottinger and Carl Douglas all returned a respectable 37 points. Linton Bell shot an excellent 38 points playing off his adjusted club handicap of 20, he continues his consistent run of form. However none of these scores could touch the mark set by Keith Salmon. The 47 points is the highest return in the 3 year history of the CGS and one which will take some beating.
Congratulations to the Four Qualifiers for the Par 3 World Cup Competition on 27th June
Keith Salmon, Lloyd Thomas, Winston Berryman, David Simon, we wish you all well.
With our fourth Major completed and four remaining the 2010 Season is coming together very nicely. The Tour moves on to Kilworth Springs in Leicestershire on Sunday 18th July for round five of the CGS 2010 Season, hope to see you there!
