Wolverhampton 1 Birmingham 0 – It was a real Fix-Up by the Dr
This is the fifth year since the inception and formation of the Caribbean Golf Society. The first event of this years golfing calendar was staged at the Wyre Forest Golf Club. Once again we were blessed with some really nice weather although the early signs did not look very promising.
Forty members and guests arrived at the club looking forward to the start of what we hope will be another great golfing tour at a number of great clubs up and down the country. We had a fantastic reception from the local golf professional and his staff. The day started with egg and bacon rolls with a few cups of tea and coffee before the first four balls approached the first tee. Amongst the group of players were all the major winners, runners up and overall winners from last season all hoping to prove they can produce some good golf again this year. The first tournament of the year is a sponsored event known as the ‘fix-up’ trophy, and last year’s winner Roan McLeod was looking to be the first player to retain this trophy. Also playing was last years ‘Order of Merit’ winner Carl Douglas who was also looking to repeat the consistent golf he produced last year.
On the course there was some great banter and some excellent golf amongst the groupings. Down the first tee CGS chairman Junior Harris was driving well and drove his tee ball far and long down the right side of the first fairway. However it was much later that day when he produced the drive of the round on the par 5 17th. It was a drive over three hundred and forty yards, leaving him a lob wedge approach to the green. (For further questions about whether he got an eagle, birdie or par, please refer to the Chairman directly) unfortunately he was not able to repeat this outstanding drive on the longest drive hole 18th.
Keith Riley playing in the second group and hoping to beat his wife’s score, having lost all but one round to her last year, was on his game and producing a great round with some excellent drives from the tee, out driving is playing partner and CGS big hitter Don Bramble on a number of occasions . In fact Keith who is 68 years old went on to win the longest drive on the day! Well done Keith!
There were three guests attending this event; Lyn Webb, Frank McCook and Gerry Parchment. Frank went on to take the nearest the pin prize with an excellent shot on the downhill par 3 16th. Well done to Frank and welcome to both Frank and Lyn whom have decided to become members for the 2011 season.
Well the day isn’t just about long drives and accurate iron play; it’s about scoring well and accumulating enough points to become the Fix-Up Cup winner for 2011. The scoring at the Wyre Forest was very close with the several players coming in with 37 points, which turned out to be just one point short of the winning score which again was shared by two golfers with only one being able to take the title. With count back deciding the winner for the 1st CGS Major of the year, the title went to first time winner Dr Josh Johnson. Well Josh you can finally say that you’ve won something with the CGS. Josh said “I am truly proud to be the first winner of a major this year, and would like to dedicate the win to the Caribbean Society”. He also mentioned that the Wolverhampton boys will be on a charge for more major wins this year. Well there’s a challenge to the rest of CGS.
Josh played very well today and scored an excellent 38 points which included 3 birdies. Congratulations Josh.
