Vassel cleans up at Little Lakes
The CGS’s 6th major event took place at the Little Lakes Golf Club in Bewdley. This small but attractive course was originally opened in 1975 has a 9 hole course. In 2000 the course was extended to its current 18 hole layout.
Twenty six members of the CGS turned up looking resplendent in our stunning red society polo shirts. The course was generally in good condition in the wake of persistent rain during recent weeks. Although rain once again threatened to disrupt proceedings as we teed off, we only had to endure a very brief and light shower that gave way to clearer skies and warm temperatures for the rest of the day.
The course challenges were characterised by its tight and sloping fairways but overall the CGS warriors were up to the challenge and scoring was generally high. First among equals was one of our senior statesmen, Vassel Brown, who carded a very impressive 42 points playing off a handicap of 8. Not content with achieving the highest stableford score of the day, Vassel also laid claim to winning the longest drive competition on the par 5, 16th before going on to win the nearest the pin in two on the par 4 18th hole.
Throughout the season, our most consistent player has been Frank McCook. It therefore came as no surprise that Frank was once again a feature when it came to dividing the spoils. Frank carded a very creditable 39 point playing off a handicap of 16. This gave Frank second place on the day and more valuable points that have seen Frank open up a significant lead at the top of the order of merit.
Ian Higgins carded a respectable 37 points playing off a handicap of 10 to claim third place. Ian also won the nearest the pin competition on the par 3 17th.
Lloyd Thomas (aka ‘Bugsie’) won the par 3’s points tally while Vassel Brown took care of the par 4’s and 5’s respectively. When I suggested to Vassel that he had effectively ‘cleaned up’, he responded by saying, ‘almost’.
We later sat down to the best after match meal we have enjoyed this season and so a warm appreciation was conveyed to the catering staff when we concluded proceedings.
September promises to be a very interesting and exciting month of golf as we look forward to the Ryder Cup competition followed immediately by our 7th Major event of the season.
