Rest of the World breeze through Jamaica for Caricom Victory
The spoils of 2010 Caricom went to the Jamaica team with a one sided victory. This year it was the ROTW turn to impose a one sided victory. The Jamaica team came out hoping to retain the bragging rights for yet another season but it wasn’t to be. The Jamaica team captain Dean Leith and his playing partner Frank McCook started well playing against Gerry Parchment and Elford Douglas. The Jamaica team was able to beat the ROTW with some notable play coming Frank McCook against the putting machine that was the ROTW boys.
There were a couple of matches that were close notably the 4th match between Eric Queely and Billy Bangha (ROTW) against Roan McLeod and Vassel Brown. This was a close fought match with either side taking the lead only to be pegged back by the other. The match went down to the final hole and with either side with an equal 3 foot putt to win both teams decided to halve the match which was a very sporting moment.
Another match which went down to the wire was the match between Rhucha Ford and Jacko Powell (ROTW) against Micky Taylor and Paul Ramsey. The ROTW team lead for most of the match however with some fighting Jamaican spirit, trailing 2 down with 2 to play manage to pull it back to win a half with probably the shot of the day coming from Paul Ramsey on the par 5 18th after both players for Jamaica hit tee shots into trees . I’m sure that after those tee shots the ROTW boys thought it was all over. Well the story goes both Paul and Micky looked at each and said its best we chip out and see what we can do with the next shot. Anyone who’s played the 18th will know that it’s a tight green with water in front. Well Paul Ramsay went for it with is three wood, an all or nothing shot and landed it 3 feet from the pin for a tap in birdie to win the hole and halve the match.
Well after a couple close matches the rest were dominated by the ROTW team with the biggest score coming from Nathan Burrows and Junior Harris against Ronald Ross and Keith Riley. “It was Nathan he was one under par after nine holes” said Keith Riley. Yes Nathan and Junior pretty much had the match rapped up after 11 holes and the rest of the round was “Exhibition golf” as Junior would say. The match ended 8 & 7 to the ROTW.
The match between Eddie Acheampong and Nigel Harris (ROTW) against George Oliver and Jay Berryman also ended in a large defeat by Jamaica, losing 7 & 6.
The day was all but lost for Jamaica with a consolation point coming from Josh Johnson and Ian Higgins winning their match 2 & 1. The rest of the matches then went to the ROTW team who really turned out for revenge after last years result.
It was a dismal outcome for Jamaica and a much deserved win by the Rest of the World.
