A win for the Captain at West Midlands Golf Club
The third ‘Caribbean golf Society’ (CGS) day took place on Sunday 18th May 2008 at the West-Midlands golf Club! This was our biggest challenge in terms of each members golf ability and durability because each member had to play from the ‘White Tees’ instead of the usual ‘Yellow Tees’ and four members of the CGS who are also members of West-Midlands Golf Society had to play from the Blue Competition Tees! More about that later.
The CGS welcomed two new members Lyndon Douglas and Keith Riley to the society and so 28 Members took to the first tee in what we can all agree was the best weather conditions so far this year! Some players really looked the part in their “Hugo Boss” and top of the range Nike outfits! Keep up the dress code guys it will soon ‘rub off’ on the rest of us. The dress code is a true testament to how far the CGS has come in just over twelve months and certainly the golf has also improved.
By the time the last four ball scores were recorded it showed the average score for the society on the day was 31 points, which was a fantastic achievement considering we were playing from the Blue & White Tees! This achievement was made possible because of players like Keith Salmon who has a playing handicap of 16. He struggled with his game during the first nine holes, and had four blobs in a row only scoring ten (10) points on the front nine. Now, when most players would be thinking of throwing in the towel, he was able to call on the potential 12 handicap he has hidden somewhere deep within and recorded an incredible score of twenty One (21) points on the back nine! So a big ‘Tiger Woods’ effort and well done to you Keith! (Watch out guys the left-handers are coming!)
Other notable performances on the day showed Lyndon Douglas who has a playing handicap of 28, produced an excellent birdie on the 14th hole, Erwin Sylvester aka ‘Soca Master’ recorded his first ever Par on the 8th hole and Keith Riley who scored an excellent 37 points from the Blue competition Tees playing also in his clubs major comp.
So gentlemen as you can see we really do have some very talented players within this CGS!
However the spoils of the day go to the CGS very own “el captain”, Jacko Powell, who scored an impressive 38 points playing off an 11 handicap. The West Midlands course is without a doubt a nice course but it’s also long with many a par 5 and an “Island Green” for the finishing par 3 eighteenth. So 38 points is a very good score playing off 11, well done to Jacko.
Longest Drive:
Yet again it was won by the consistent Junior Harris. I am sure that drive was close on 300 yards! And he also split the fair way. After winning the longest drive for the second time in a row, the gauntlet has been set for the rest of us to take up the challenge.
Nearest the pin:
Was won by Mr. ‘Fix-up’ himself Neville Rhoden by stroking a lovely eight iron onto the very difficult 142 yards par 3 island green!
There was a special token of recognition award presented to Denny from the CGS members for all his hard work that largely goes unseen by the majority of the CGS but very much appreciated, so a very big thank you again Denny for your unquestionable service to this CGS!!
Ladies and Gentlemen do not forget the communication network that we have, do make full use of it. The committee can only promote and organize events if we keep in regular contact and tell them what we want. The committee would like to thank all its members who remembered to bring a change of clothing for the ‘three course’ meal and presentation that was wonderfully prepared and served to the highest quality!! (Let us hope the club captain, who I must say was a very good compare and articulated his words very well! remembers the dress code for next time!) (Joke!) Well done again for acting professionally and orderly at all times both on and off the golf course.
The CGS and all its members would like to extend a warm hand-shake of appreciation to West-Midlands Golf Club for their excellent hospitality and service on the day!!
