George Oliver takes his first major win
Our second major got under way at Farthingstone Golf Club beneath grey clouds, but once again we were lucky to complete the day without being affected by any of the surrounding showers.
The turnout was somewhat lower than normal with 20 of us ready to commence battle! The Farthingstone course was not what most of us were expecting, the fairways were difficult and the rough unforgiving.
Although it is one of the shorter courses that we play and with no roll on the ball many of the holes played a lot longer than would be expected. Greens were tricky and a little on the slow side reflecting in the scores being lower than normal with a number of three putts being made.
Alas for the second event in ten days the CGS had another first time winner and again it was well deserved. Assisted by chip-ins at the fifth for bogey and another at the sixth for birdie George Oliver came in with a very credible 35 points. On the other hand our runner up Trevor Lammy was not at all pleased with his finish, reaching the green in two on the par 5, 18th with only a two putt required to clinch the win he then four putted for bogey and second place from Ian Higgins on count back with 34 points. We could not go through the day’s events without mentioning our Founders day winner Denny Senior who came back to earth with a bang but took it all in his stride by collecting the booby prize with a 16 points total.
Hole eleven was contested as the nearest the pin and was won by Frank McCook. Hole sixteen for closest the pin in two went to Keith Salmon and Jay Berryman was the winner of the big hitters on the 17th to claim the longest drive.
The CGS assembles again on the 18th May on the PGA at the Belfry.
