Taylor Wins the Fix-Up at Tamworth
On the first tee there were some new shoes and drivers on display to go alongside hopefully some half decent golf! Many players talked about a game of two halves (Front nine and Back nine) and “if only I selected a different club” etc, etc! There were some good scores with players recording 17, 18, & 19 points on the front nine and scores of 18, 19 & 20 on the back. Unfortunately the players recording those scores couldn’t string those good points together, on the front and the back however, one or two were able to do just that. On the course, there were some great drives, lovely iron play and some skilful chip-ins. It is a mystery how some players make the game look so simple and for others it’s a bit of a struggle! The day uncovered some first time winners and showed that you cannot keep good players down. The usual suspects are already starting to jostle for position to claim the CGS ‘Order of Merit Champion’ captain Jacko Powell is keen to hold on to his title and told everyone his intentions! So come on CGS members lets not make it too easy for him this year.
Mikey Taylor was the worthy winner of the ‘Fix-Up’ trophy and the overall winner on the day. Mikey scored a magnificent 37 points, 20 of those points was gained on the back nine. Apparently he left a few shots out there on the front nine so it could have easily been a 40pts winner! Mike is also the first person to qualify for the end of year ‘Ryder-Cup’ style match against the Chris Morris Golf Society. Well done Mike and good luck for the rest of the year. Oh yeah, don’t for get to buy yourself some plasters because I hear the ‘Handicap’ secretary will be doing some cutting very soon!!
Longest Drive
Eric Queely was the worthy winner of the longest drive competition. This is a man who is very familiar with long drives; the winning drive was approximately 275 yards into the wind. There are certainly a few guys in the CGS that can hit long drives and it will be very interesting to see how this particular competition unfolds as the season progresses. Well done to Eric who is also a new member to the CGS this year although, he did attend a few events last year as a guest!
Nearest the Pin
David Simon was the winner of the ‘Nearest the Pin’ competition on the 154 yards Par 3. Dave reportedly hit a lovely long fade on the green with a 7 iron selection, the ball ended up approximately 6ft from the hole. Dave missed his ‘birdie putt’ but got his Par. Well done Dave, the CGS looks forward to seeing you in the winners circle again in the coming events.
The CGS would like to thank the staff of Tamworth Golf Club for their hospitality and friendship. A big thank you goes to club Secretary Denny Senior who was unable to attend for personal reasons, thanks for you efforts in arranging this and forth coming events. Also a big thank you to all players who managed to pay the event fee before the day of the event and therefore made organising events on the day much easier for the committee, please keep it up there are no excuses now. Finally, a warm welcome to all new members to the CGS.
