Well, it was the second official Caribbean Golf Society (CGS) golfing extravaganza, which took place Saturday April 12th at Stonebridge golf course. It was another great setting at a private club for our society members and guests to enjoy, of course there were a few of us that have never played at Stonebridge before so that was a good experience. The golf package included tea and coffee, a free bucket of golf balls to warm up on the driving range and soup & sandwiches to refuel the body afterwards.

Twenty strong members of the CGS took to the first tee looking forward to a feast of solid golf play, the early starters got the best ‘tee off’ weather whilst those bringing up the rear had to face the first phase of ‘brolly’ weather conditions. In fact for the duration of the day we experienced all the four seasons, autumn, winter, spring and summer! I am sure some players missed ‘birdie’ and ‘par’ putts whilst standing over their balls as a sudden down fall of snowy ‘hail stones’ came crashing down on our heads as the heavens opened up!

There were some very strong individual players that stood firm despite some very difficult playing conditions! Players were sinking puts from all over the place, some playing well below their handicaps which was good to see. I assume some of those players will have to purchase plasters for themselves, because they will be ‘cut’ in time for the next event! (Do I hear ‘Amen’ from the lower handicap players?) (Joke!) It was also good to witness players almost reaching ‘par five’ greens in two shots (yes brethren two shots – 28 handicap my foot! Sorry only joking) the beauty of this game shows it does not matter what handicap you are playing off, we all have the ability and opportunity to win something on any given day. 

It was a 28 handicap golfer who won the days event with 36 points, and yes the man has been bleeding ever since having now been cut. Ansel Pottinger was a 28 handicap golfer but not anymore, we all know that Ansel can hit a long ball and isn’t bad from close up either, his handicap is now starting to reflect that, Well Done Ansel.

The par three challenges were won with a great shot! I am led to believe the golfers amongst us call that great shot a ‘Sally Gunnell’ surely that proves we can all win something at any stage.

The longest drive was another great spectacle with some unbelievable long straight drives! One of the group of four balls had three players who out drove the longest drive at that time by a considerable margin! Fantastic, absolutely marvelous!! (Let’s gets those drivers checked for legality!) Or will one of that ‘four ball’ members get me similar driver? (joke!)

The weather was not all dome and gloom, we did have mostly dry fine weather and the sun did come out to say hello to us, so it was truly a wonderful day for golf. The soup and sandwiches went down very well after such a long walk!

The Host treated us very well and there were no complaints from anyone about the service, from the first ‘Tee’ through to the nineteenth hole! Everyone said they enjoyed the day and looking forward to the next event at ‘West-Midlands golf course’. So get practicing to reduce the number of ‘blobs’ on those cards!

I am sure all the members would like to send a ‘big’ thank you to all the committee members and the unknown helpers behind the scenes for putting on another successful event.

Longest Drive:

The Longest drive went to Junior Harris with a huge drive on the 14th into a slight breeze…..Does drug testing apply to amateurs!!

Nearest Pin:

The Nearest the pin prize on the 13th went to Sally Gunnell himself Mr Don Campbell, oh yes forgot to mention he did three putt that green, anyway a win is a win, well done Don.
