Ansel Welcombes Another Major Victory!
The CGS 2023 season began with a visit to The Welcombe Golf Club in Warwickshire.
It was a good turnout with some 39 players, two of which were guests competing for the various on-course prizes on offer with CGS members challenging for The Fix Up Cup.
It’s been a few years since we last played The Welcombe and it seems to somehow have managed to slip under our radar as a good early season venue.
There was initially some doubt to whether the event would take place, this was due to the inclement weather just days before. At one point the event was even cancelled, but our fears were unnecessary has the course quickly recovered and was found to be in good condition for the time of year.
It was good to see the camaraderie displayed on the putting green and the practice area along with plenty of witty banter none of which had been lost over the winter. All the players were looking eager to showcase their game which they had been fine tuning over the winter with a focus on taking the Order of Merit title from current champion CGS Captain Eddie Wedderburn.
So, with play underway and the results in the wait to see who would come away with the spoils was over.
The results were as follows: –
With three players amazingly posting the same wining score of 34 points, it would be down to count-back to decide a winner.
1st – Ansel Pottinger
2nd on count back – Lloyd Thomas
3rd again on count back – Dave Brown
Longest Drive – Mr Captain Eddie Wedderburn
Nearest the pin – Ian Higgins
Nearest the pin in 2 – Paul Ramsey
Nearest the pin in 3 – Carlton Tomlinson
Birdie Hole prize which was hole 13 was shared by Justin Hinton & Ian Higgins
A special note for the highest score of the day must go out to our guest Taylor MacDonald who came in with a score of 35 points.
Our other guest Chris Wilson also came in with a respectable 31 points.
A mention for new member Jacob Wedderburn son of our captain Eddie taking the family spoils and outscoring his dad. I’m sure that had gone down well in the Wedderburn household.
Finally, to last year’s winner Noel Wright who last year won the Fix-Up Cup with an amazing 42 points, found himself at the opposite end of the field with what I’m sure he’d agree was his worst performance since joining the CGS. I think its best not to mention his score, lets just say he wouldn’t be able to legally drink with it.
Thanks to the Welcombe for their hospitality and providing us with a good course as usual.
The CGS tour now moves on to Cleobury Mortimer to contest the Founders Trophy
