34 Golfers arrived at the Vale of Evesham ready to do battle in the CGS 5th Major but unlike all the year’s previous events the weather was showing its ugly side. As registration started the heavens opened and we had a torrential shower, as we looked out and saw the putting green and the 18th green covered by water the last thing we expected to do was to play golf after the rain had stopped. Once the rain had seized the grounds staff got to work and hour later the first group were on their way down the first fairway to experience perhaps the best greens we have had this season.

Joining the regular CGS members were two guest’s Eddie Wedderburn and Dean Ebanks, with Eddie bringing his “A” game and finishing with 38 points, well done Eddie. The course was in excellent condition and the rain helped those of us who left the comfort of the fairways and visited the seeding long grass by damping down the pollen. Scores on the day were good and we found yet another first time winner in Rodney Dillon who has been a long time member of the CGS, he was hard pressed by Mary Riley and Keith Salmon who have both won in years past, all three players finishing on 36 points. The win reminds us that we still have some competition from the Wolverhampton boys.

Usual suspect Ian Higgins for the first time in a while did not collect a prize as he missed out on the longest drive to Trevor Lammy, nearest the pin went to Micky Taylor and nearest in two went to Clyde Pile. Form player and pre-event favourite Howard Brown came in with 35 points. A big thank you to the staff at the Vale who made us very welcome, and the hard work on the day to get the course playable ensured CGS had another very enjoyable day’s golf.
